Welcome to the

Carbonate Reservoir Group

The Carbonate Reservoir Group at the Institute of Petroleum Engineering is world-renowned for its applied and fundamental research on improving the predictability of hydrocarbon recovery from carbonate reservoirs.

External PhD Students

The Carbonate Research Group hosts a number of external PhD students that are either located at a different department or university or work for the oil and gas industry. These students are either fully supervised or partially supervised by a senior staff member of the Carbonate Research Group.

Abdul Awid, Weatherford

Supervisors

Sebastian Geiger and Eric Mackay (FAST Group)

Research

Abdul is working on the upscaling of fractured carbonate reservoirs to analyse how different upscaling approaches imapct the choice of well location, well completion and down-hole equipment.

Muhammad Gibrata, ADCO

Supervisors

Rink van Dijke and Sebastian Geiger

Research

Muhammad is studying near-miscible three-phase flow using pore-network modelling to develop better relative permeability and capillary pressure models for reservoir simulation.

Osman Hossam, Imperial College London

Supervisors

Prof Matt Jackson (Imperial College London) and Prof Sebastian Geiger

Research

Osman is working on adaptive gridding for reservoir simulation using fully unstructured grids. His PhD project is funded by the NERC Centre for Doctoral Training in Oil and Gas.

Hove Kouevi, Department of Mathematics, Heriot-Watt University

Supervisors

Gabriel Lord (Department of Mathematics) and Sebastian Geiger

Research

Hove is investigating how exponential integrators and stochastic partial differential equations can be used to model fluid-rock interactions at the pore-scale.

Daniel Schulte, Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany

Supervisors

Prof Ingo Sass (TU Darmstadt) and Prof Sebastian Geiger

Research

Daniel is working on applying various optimisation methods to the numerical simulation of shallow and deep geothermal systems.

Basem Tawfik, EREX Petroleum Consultants

Supervisors

Patrick Corbett and Gillian Pickup

Research

Basem is investigating how reservoir rock-typing for carbonates impacts the initialisation of carbonate reservoir simulation models.
