ICCR review, a new PhD graduate, and EAGE 2016

We enjoyed a successful review of our ICCR project in Rio de Janeiro, which Jane has covered very nicely in this article. After a little breather, we got busy preparing for the 78th EAGE Conference and Exhibition in Vienna where we are giving a number of papers and are also busy presenting the Carbonate Reservoir Group at the Foundation CMG booth. Inbetween, Alessandro successfully defended his PhD thesis and is now the proud owner of a customised Carbonate Reservoir Group PhD hat - congratulations, Dr Mangione!

Closing out 2015 and going full-steam ahead into 2016

We enjoyed our customary Christmas Carbonate Reservoir Christmas to close out 2015. After a well-earned break, the group went full-steam ahead into 2016, welcoming Mohamed Al-Breiki, Fahed Al-Hashmi and Daniel Wong as new PhD students in February and March. Mohamed and Fahed will be developing new ways to model, cluster and rank giant carbonate reservoirs while Daniel will be investigating novel ways to upscale fractured reservoirs.

A field-trip, 40 years IPE, and a welcome

October and November have been busy with running a field trip to South Queensferry to show our engineers, physicists, and mathematicians in the team how hydrocarbon systems look like in nature (thanks Pat!). We also hosted a table at the IPE 40th anniversary. Pictures from both events can be found on our Twitter Feed. Finally, we welcome Dr Francesca Watson, who has joined us from Durham University.

Foundation CMG and CMG Ltd. Visit

Duke Anderson, president of Foundation CMG, and Keith Kovalsky, VP Technology of Foundation CMG, visited IPE to review and discuss the research and training activities at Eric Mackay's Foundation CMG Chair for Reactive Transport Modelling and our Foundation CMG Chair for Carbonate Reservoir Modelling and meet staff and students involved with the Chair programmes. They were accompanied by Susan Fellows and Steve Webb from CMG Ltd. and Prof Arne Skaue, Foundation CMG Chair for EOR Modelling at the University of Bergen. It was a successful and enjoyable three-day event - thank you to everyone who was involved in this visit and made sure it ran so smoothly!

Welcome Julien

Julien Maes has joined the ICCR team as a postdoctoral researcher from Imperial College London to work on pore-scale reactive transport modelling during single- and multiphase flow.

Our research is featured in SPE's Journal of Petroleum Technology

Florian's work, carried out jointly with Jan Nordbotten at University of Bergen, on full pressure coupling for hydro-geomechanical reservoir simulation, and our RRM project, were are both featured in the July issue of SPE's Journal of Petroleum Technology. Read the stories here and here.

Graduations 2015

Three former Carbonate Reservoir Group PhD students, Christine, Santhi and Robert, received their doctorates at the summer 2015 graduations - and two of them were able to make the long trip to Edinburgh to be there in person. We were delighted to celebrate with them!
